Dear Tom,
We, a happy few of your humble fans from all over Russia, are sending you this letter with one sole purpose: to thank you, kind sir, for what you are, what you have become for us and how much you changed our lives (even though the changes may appear relatively small to anyone else but us). Granted, we’re no native English speakers (duh), so please, indulge us and be gentle. We’re also very nervous about this letter – because, you know, you’re Tom Hiddleston, and we’re a bunch of anons, and, really, you should’ve seen the lengthy debates we’ve got into while composing this! And yet, we’re still sending this to you, in hopes you read it and receive our affection and gratitude, for there are things that we, despite all anxiousness, just couldn’t not to say.
Here’s the story. A long time ago (about 5 months or so), in a galaxy far, far away (deep in the wastelands of Russian Internet), there was a certain forum. Said forum, Tom, was no friendly place. In fact, it was well known for low tolerance (or absence of it whatsoever), wide range of extreme opinions, strong language on a regular basis, lack of respect for the interlocutors… A peculiar place, charming in its own way, but wicked nonetheless, and that place has made a name for itself as the Holy War Mecca.
That’s where we all met. And found each other.
It is true to say that it was Loki, and not you, who first brought us all there: “The Avengers”, as you know, have been a huge hit, and Loki got his fare share of devoted admirers, and we were, and still are, among the ranks of his army. It was Loki who brought us all to one small topic on the wicked forum, so pass him our regards, if you may. But it was you, and only you, who brought us all together and made us who we are today.
We’re no angels, of course. And since we all came to the forum – and, mainly, the Loki-thread – knowing full well what it was and what to expect, no-one can blame us for initial hostility to each other. Really, we’re all people, aren’t we? (Well, some of us, the ones most baffled by your perfection, still have hard time believing you’re actually a real human being and not an elaborate product of computer technology worked into your every movie by illusion designers (and they half-seriously consider the possibility of all the fans meeting you’ve been to being the testing ground for government-developed mass hypnosis), but that’s not really the case, is it?) We’re all people. Besides, it’s Loki we’re talking about here. Loki, the God of Misunderstood Pain, the God of Mischief and The God of Fangirls’ Hearts, is such an ambiguous and three-dimensional (in more ways than one) character that his storyline in the Avengers was bound to spark heated controversy among his lovers - or, for a moment, his haters. You know Loki. “I do what I want!” This phrase has become a battle-cry for all the Loki fans out there, us included. And so, we fought.
That’s how it all began.
Then everything changed when someone brought pictures of you to our thread – something that turned our minds away from Loki and toward you. Or rather brought you to our attention, for back then we all digged Loki pretty hard (and we still do love the guy, but that’s not the point). We were not so shallow as to lower our swords and throw away our Loki-feelings fuelled fighting spirit simply because of having looked at some pictures (no matter how good-looking the guy in them might be).
But you know what? Turned out it was not Loki who is the real God of Mischief here, but you are. Slowly and surreptitiously, with the humble air of modesty and innocence, you caught us unsuspecting and turned our thread – and, later, our lives – around. One moment you were only dropping by occasionally (mostly as a fellow Loki fan), and then, in a blink, you already claimed the spotlight – and our thread did suffer a seachange – into something rich and strange. Right in the middle of the permanent war zone of the wicked forum, our thread morphed into a sanctuary of love, piece, joy and respect, polite conversations, intellectual discussions, courteous debates, sophisticated small-talks, smiles, rainbows and ritual hugs. While other anons, staying true to the unholy spirit of the forum, side-eye us rather disapprovingly and even try to sow the seeds of strife among us from time to time, we just keep calm and carry on. For having learnt how humble, intelligent, kind and respectful you are, we found ourselves tamed and mellowed. Your smile and your charm have worked their magic to turn a legion of gangster anons into a horde of fluffy kittens and golden retriever puppies. And now, as we’ve learnt this new way of life – the Hiddlestoners’ way – it’s impossible to go back to our old vicious online selves; and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Because when the atmosphere in the thread was cleared by your grace and everyone calmed down enough to start getting to know each other, it turned out this whole Loki-thread ordeal was something bigger than just some online fun to fill spare time with. While no-one neither expected what was to follow nor could imagine it happening, we, pushed by Loki and guided by you, stumbled upon a miracle. Something that was, and still remains, one of the best things in our lives.
You have probably grown weary from all this unnecessary detailed preface. If so, we apologize. Here’s the main part.
As it turned out, we were all very different. And when we say “very”, we mean it. From Classic Literature to Space to Comic books to Norse Culture to Anime different, and worse. But this we only found out later, when we became friends – a band of friends who were unlikely to find each other otherwise, but discovered each other thanks to you, and now stand united in this glorious deed – to tell you how grateful we are.
No matter how different we are, we love each other. In fact, all the differences only make our fellowship more interesting and much more endearing. But dear Tom, please, spare a moment of your time and think about it. Russia is, well, huge. Lots of space, a number of different time zones, and don’t even get us started on the climate zones… It’s a giant country, where distances between cities can be enormous, and lifestyles in different cities may vary drastically, welling up all the more boundaries between people.
We all live in different cities. In addition to our diverse interests and hobbies, there are hours and miles that separate us. There are those among us who even live in other countries. But you, kind sir, have brought us all together. And we can’t find words eloquent enough to thank you for this. For we have found a kinship in each other’s company. Some of us have been lonely, some desperate, some lost, some searching for a pinch of spice in their lives; we found remedies in each other’s company. It was truly a discovery. We are fiends, and now we can’t imagine our lives without each other, but we would never know each other if not for you.
You, along with gloriously wayward prince Hal, also were an inspiration for our most beloved project – The Shakespearean Skype Club. It’s just as bad and crazy as it sounds: we’re reading Shakespeare’s plays out loud in Skype conference calls, taking turns cue after cue, and we do our best to act it out, and – damn, you should hear us! We’ve made such a progress comparing to when we started (with Richard II, to be able to watch the Hollow Crown live, without subtitles). This is mostly for fun, and most of the time is simply hilarious (though sometimes we can’t tell if it’s our minds that are dirty or if it’s all Shakespeare’s innuendos that provoke us), but then, we see wisdom and beauty of the plays, too. And we have you to thank for this – for reminding us of the eternal beauty that Shakespeare’s plays are.
While we’re at it, may we ask you to pass our love to Hal? When we first read the plays and then watched them, we were moved beyond words. Hal’s inner turmoil, that feigned yet devilishly charming loose behavior of his during his princely times, rebellious spirit of his youth intertwined with sheer sense of royal responsibility that grows deep into his very core, his doubts, his pride, his regal bravery and his sincerity to himself made the story fascinating and filled our hearts with admiration and compassion. The beautiful and tragic story of Hal’s coming-of-age and his growth into one of the finest, bravest, most heroic kings was both heartbreaking and inspiring. A thousand words can't make the mark this single role of yours has left upon our souls. You’ve taken us on a terrific journey with Hal, a journey that left us convinced that there is always a way from the wild parties at Boar’s Head to glorious victories; that even though fun and adventures might seem appealing, there are responsibilities to uphold, no matter how hard it is, and that upholding them is not a dull necessity, but a honorable deed; that a victory is possible even if – and especially if – all odds are against you and you go into your last battle ready to die, but not even considering escaping, yielding or giving up. Your Hal has taught us many things, and we'll always be grateful to him for this.
We learn from you, too. Learn to see beyond initial impressions, learn to look deeper, learn to try to understand the deep strings that move a character; learn to live our lives in honest, embracing who we are, learn to fight for what is important for us, life-wise (no matter what others may say), and learn to see the beauty and delight in common things. We learn to be courageous enough to be honest – to the world as well as to ourselves; learn that nothing is more important than treasuring every moment of the present; learn that clemency, hopefulness and kindness always overcome the hardships of life; and last but not least - we learn to sing from the rooftops.
And, having gained strength from you, we now desperately want to let you know how much you mean for us.
We believe, and fiercely so, that you, albeit already shining with talent and proficiency, still have a lot to say to the world. That your talent, already mesmerizing, may be developed further still, and we wish you all the strength and luck you’ll need on your way, and some more of it. Even if it gets tough, we want you to know that we believe in you. We will always support you on your way. And, of course, we’re not the only ones. Lots of people from all over the world admire and respect you, and we are but a few of them, yet we want you to remember. Always remember that there are people whose lives you’ve changed for the better, even if only in the smallest parts. Sometimes just one smile more is all that’s needed to keep going, to keep fighting, to keep searching, to keep loving; and you caused lots of smiles and happy feelings. We wish you to never lose your own smile and your sweet self, your ability to marvel at the world and notice the best things, the true things, the common magic of everyday happiness. We wish you to keep living your life with an open heart, as, thanks to you, will we.
Thank you.
And if this letter made you smile at least once, then our mission is completed.
Live long and prosper.
Staying your affectionate admirers,
Sincerely,
Your Russian fans
